DIY: How to Paint Terra Cotta Planters

DIY: Colorful Planters. Clay pots are awesome because they are inexpensive, simple and easy to personalize | Live Colorful

In one day is the official start of spring. I’m excited about the plants and flowers more than anything. When I was living in Mexico I didn’t have enough space for flowers or plants in my apartment, so when I moved to Asheville, NC one of the first things I did was to buy a couple of seeds to plant in our tiny garden.

I was really excited when I saw that some of those flowers actually grew. That’s how I started to love the idea of filling the house with plants and flowers during spring, they really make me feel happy.

With plans of adding more flowers and plants around the apartment, comes the plan of finding cute inexpensive planters for them, which is not easy. So instead of spending tons of money, I went to the store and bought a few terra cotta planters and painted them myself.

Terra cotta planters are awesome because they are inexpensive, simple and easy to personalize.

STEPS:

  1. Paint the pots using acrylic paint. I painted the base in one color and the pot in other, I love the contrasting effect. You can use as many colors as you want and even draw some patterns like here.
  2. I didn’t add any protection after the layer of acrylic paint. I normally leave the plastic pot that comes with the plant and put it inside the pot.
I have had this planter for over a year and the color still looks great, but if you are planting your plants directly in the pot, I recommend you add a layer of Mod Podge or the Bulls Eye Clear Shellac to protect the paint from the water and humidity.

Another great idea to save some money with planter is to repurpose things we have around the house and we no longer use. Mugs, cans and tires make amazing flower pots!

I want to live with you! Your world is filled with so much color & I love it! I am going to paint our pots, but I can’t keep anything in them because the deer eat everything I plant. Colorful empty pots are enough though. Hugs to you and your beautiful family.
