DIY: Colorful Photo Magnets for Mother’s Day

Here is an idea for Mother’s Day! Make some colorful magnets with personalized pictures

One of the things I used to love when I celebrated Mother’s Day back in Mexico, was opening my mom’s old photo albums and looking through our baby pictures. It was sweet to remember all those moments with my mom and celebrate with her.

So this year I wanted to make something with pictures for my home too, to continue in some way with the tradition. And since sometimes it’s difficult to look at all those special pictures if they are in a photo album or our cell phones, I decided to make these colorful magnets that were so easy and fun to make, and I can put them around the house, on the refrigerator, in the office or anywhere other metallic things I have, like our metal bedside tables. I thought they looked pretty cute there.

  • Print your own photos

  • Basswood Sheets

  • Exacto knife

  • Ruler

  • Pencil

  • Acrylic paint

  • Mod Podge

  • Brushes

  • Tacky glue or hot glue and a hot glue gun

How to make colorful photo magnets for Mother’s Day:

  1. Print a few pictures. Print a few personal pictures with your kids and with your mom in a similar size that you want to create your photo magnets.

  2. Cut the basswood squares. Measure, mark with a pencil and cut little basswood squares using an x-acto knife. Mine are 3” x 3”.

3. Paint the basswood squares. I painted my basswood squares in white and then I added a few colorful strokes with acrylic paint just to add some color.

You can use a solid color for each one of your photo magnets, or do something creative in the back like lines, dots or draw some flowers or hearts. Wait a couple of hours until your design is completely dry.

4. Glue the pictures. Use a multi purpose glue like tacky glue to add the pictures on top of the basswood squares. I also recommend that you add a layer or two of Mod Podge to protect your pots magnets from water or dust, and you can clean them easily.

5. Add the magnets. Wait until the modpodge dries and glue a couple of magnet strips on the back of your photo magnet.

These would also be awesome coasters too, like the ones I shared here: Personalized coasters for your home.

To make coasters follow the same steps but skip adding the magnet strips at the end and cut the basswood a bit bigger, making the squares approximately 6 cm on each side.

If you are a daddy looking for ideas to make with the kids for Mother’s Day, this one is so easy, and the kids will have so much fun choosing their favorite colors to paint the photo magnets for mom, plus choosing their favorite pictures with her.
