Decorate your Shorts with Fun Fabric this Summer

Add color to your shorts with a fun printed fabric and create a fun look this summer.

The last few days have been really hot and have made me feel like I want to wear shorts all the time!

I have seen some awesome DIYs in Pinterest about how to upcycle your old shorts so I decided to make my own version using a piece of colorful fabric. I found this pair of shorts in a second hand store but I didn't like the bottom, so I cut it and then I realize they were too short! so I decided to save them by adding a piece of fabric in the bottom and cover my legs a bit more.

The fabric helps a lot and I definitely feel more comfortable wearing them, so this is something you can try if you have a pair of shorts that are just a little too short or you want to change the style of your shorts for something more fun and interesting. Plus this is a great way to add some color to your summer outfits!

  • Fabric. I used two pieces of fabric that measured approximately 9 inches x 8 inches.

  • Sewing scissors

  • Pencil or tailors chalk

  • Thread

  • Needles

  • Sewing ruler like this one here.

  • Sewing machine. You can sew everything by hand, a sewing machine just saves a little time, but this one is easy enough that it's not really necessary

How to decorate your shorts with fabric:

1. Cut your shorts if you don’t like the hemline or the length. (optional) Wear your shorts and make sure you like how they look on your legs before adding the extra colorful fabric. If you think that are too weird, or too tight or too long, feel free to cut a few cm at least. Use a tailor’s chalk to mark where you want to cut out your shorts. I recommend you use a ruler to be more precise and cut your shorts diagonally like the image below.

If you already have your shorts at the ideal length, just skip this step.

2. Turn your shorts inside out. You are going to need to turn the shorts inside out so you can see the pockets and measure how much fabric you need to add to cover them completely.

3. Create the fake pockets using colorful fabric. Make two little fake pockets using colorful fabric (like the image below) and use them to cover the real pockets in your shorts.

4. Sew the fake pockets to your shorts. Open the fake pockets and sew them to the real pockets in your shorts making sure you hide all stitches. I know, it sounds confusing, but basically you just need to open the colorful fabric fake pockets, cover the real pockets and sew them together (like image below).

When you finish sewing, turn your new fun shorts outside in and you‘ll be ready to wear them all summer!

I hope you like this simple idea and it inspires you to add more color to your outfits this year :)
