Colorful Crafty Projects For Your Dining Room

Discover how these crafty projects can transform your dining room area into something colorful and fresh.

I grew up in Tabasco, Mexico and every spring break and summer break we will have big parties. We used to live 5 minutes away from the beach, so this time of the year lots of my friends were basically there all day long. There are often concerts, shows and all kinds of late night parties on the beach that's we call “lunadas”.

But I guess I have always been a bit of weirdo, the one that prefers staying at home and having fun with crafts or paint.I remember one summer, when I was probably 15 years old, I decided to stay at home most of my vacation and paint my bedroom. I wanted to create an ombre wall. So I went to the store and bought two big pink and white buckets and painted more than 50 small squares that covered the whole wall behind my bed to create that ombre effect. I layed down at the end of the week with a smile on my face. I truly believed that it was a fun summer.

Things are not that different now. I’m loving every morning and mid afternoon, or whenever my son decides to take a nap, to bring out my craft material and make something pretty with them.

I went to Target the other and I found the amazing things I used to add some color and freshness into my living room! like the glitter, washi tape, plastic bowls, beautiful scrapbooking papers, markers, flower base and more. I even found the cutest table runner that became my favorite piece this summer!

I sat down while my son was napping and I created a decoupage fruit bowl, painted and personalized a new grocery bag and made a glittery centerpiece. All those things in probably an hour! The table was a mess, but it was worth it. I’ll share with you some of the steps I followed to create the fruit bowl and the glittery flower vase.

How to Make a Decoupaged Fruit Bowl

I loved this idea of getting a simple plastic bowl and then add another pattern on top using the decoupaged technique. I think is fun, and an excuse to craft something in the afternoon.

I used a plastic bowl for this project because I loved that blue color, but you can easily get a bowl in a different kind of material. Plastic is actually slippery so it took me a bit more time to secure each paper piece on place, that’s why I think that ceramic and wood will work great.

  1. Cut scrapbook paper pieces. To create the decoupaged look, start by cutting some scrapbooking paper in small pieces. I found a scrapbook page with some awesome bright yellow scales that I loved.

  2. Glue the paper into the bowl. I used mod podge to glue the small pieces of paper into the bowl. I started from the top of the bowl, going around it and then adding another layer below until I got the effect I was looking for. I have to cut some scrapbooking paper pieces in straight lines to make sure they have the shape of the bowl.

  3. Let the bowl dry for a couple of hours, and enjoy it!

How to Create a Glittery and Colorful Flower Vase:

For this project get a basic and plain ceramic flower vase or wood flower vase.

  1. Create a pattern. Use washi tape to delineate spaces and create a pattern. This washi tape can stay as part of your design or you can remove it later.

  2. Add glitter to your flower vase. Apply mod podge and then throw some glitter on top. Let this first latyer dry and then carefully apply more mod podge using a sponge or brush and add more glitter until you cover your flower vase completely.

  3. Let your vase dry. Let your flower vase dry for a couple of hours and shake it to make sure you get rid of all the glitter excess. You can add more glitter if you find weird empty spots. When it’s done, remove the washi tape or leave it as part of your design and enjoy your new colorful piece!

I love how my new pieces look all together in my dining area, especially the flower vase on top of the colorful table runner. I sat down the other day, lighted a candle, poured a cup of coffee and enjoyed my new space. I hope these crafty and simple ideas inspire you to add some color to your living room and spend some time crafting this summer.
