DIY: Frida Kahlo Pumpkin for Halloween

Create this adorable and quirky pumpkin inspired by one of the most famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo this Halloween

I really love looking at day of the dead inspired decorations for Halloween.

It seems like the colorful mexican tradition has become really popular during this season. It's spooky but yet not gloomy, which might be the reason why some people that want more than just black to decorate their homes love it so much.

I was thinking about the way we mix two cultures, and I had the idea of decorating the house for Halloween using as inspiration one of the most famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.

The pumpkin ended up looking so cool, and the coolest part is that it was quite easy, almost no carving at all!

MATERIALS:

  • Pupmkin

  • Carving knife or carving tools

  • Fake eyebrows or a small piece of felt

  • Artificial flowers

  • Brown yarn

  • Sparkly cardstock like this one here or paper and glitter

How to Make a Frida Kahlo Pumpkin for Halloween:

  1. Create the eyes. Start by carving the eyes for your Frida’s Kahlo pumpkin using a small knife and making some small holes in the middle of your pumpkin. Leave enough space on the top part of the pumpkin to add the braid and flower crown later.

  2. Glue the iconic Frida Kahlo eyebrows. Frida Kahlo was well know for her awesome and thick eyebrows, so re create them using felt or any other material similar to hair. I used some fake eyebrows I found in the dollar store and they were just perfect for this project but I could have easily make something similar using fur or felt.

  3. Make the braid for Frida Kahlo’s hair. Use yarn to create a thick braid for Frida Kahlo’s pumpkin hair. I think I used like 20 strings of yarn per side and then I started braiding them together. Then glue this braid around the pumpkin like you see in the picture below.

  4. Decorate Fridas Kahlo’s flower crown. Create the famous and amazing Frida Kahlo flower crown using artificial flowers and leaves. Glue these using hot glue or tacky glue, especially if you are creating this pumpkin with kids and don’t want to deal with the hot glue gun.

  5. Add some sparkly lips. They sell some amazing glittery cardstock in the craft stores that are perfect for this part of the project. Cut a small piece and make some cute lips for your Frida Kahlo’s pumpkin.

This Frida Kahlo’s pumpkin will look amazing in your home, and it will definetly add a quirky and cute touch to your Halloween decorations this year.
