How to Make Curtains (DIY Video Tutorial)

DIY

Add color and texture to your walls with new curtains! Learn how to make them in a super simple way.

Curtains are a great way to add color and pattern to your home, and they are so easy to make! When we moved, my baby was so little that I really didn't want to work on many projects for this home, so I left the ugly gray-green curtains that were in the house when we moved for months. Until I started this fun collaboration with Digital Fabrics thanks to the recommendation a great friend, Jocelina Paixao from Pink Chocolate Break.

Digital Fabrics is an online fabric shop where you can design and print your own fabric. I have to say that my favorite part was their range of fabric that goes from chiffon, matte lycra, fleece, cotton linen, wattle and many other options for the fashion and home decor industry, and of course, the fact that you can create and print your own designs.I knew that I wanted to make something for the home since I haven't been able to find prints that I love.

I LOVE the way the curtains turned out, and how happy our living room looks with this beautiful vibrant yellow in the walls.

Check out our living room before and after below:

Before and After. My living room looks just amazing with new bright yellow curtains! so fresh and vibrant.

I created a LIVE COLORFUL collection with Digital Fabrics with bright and happy prints that would look amazing for curtains, pillows, bean bags, upholstery, baskets and many other projects. They sent me a couple of yards with my favorite print, a vibrant yellow. When the fabric arrived, I knew exactly what to make with it, new curtains!

Here is a video tutorial with the step by step to make simple DIY  curtains:

MATERIALS:

  • Approximately 2.5 meters of fabric. The fabric I used is named waratah, 100% polyester.

  • Sewing machine, my favorite is this one that I got recently for sewing clothes and DIY projects.

  • Thread

  • Scissors

  • Iron

How to Make and Sew Curtains:

  1. Measure your windows, the length and width using a measuring tape. Watch minute 1:05 for reference here.

  2. Lay down the fabric in the floor upside down, measure the length you need. I added 6 inches approximately to add hems at the top of my curtains plus 4.5 inches more in the bottom of the fabric to make the hems in the bottom of the curtains. Watch minute 1:22 for reference here.

  3. For the hem at the top of your curtain, measure 6 inches, this is where you will introduce the curtain rod. Fold these 6 inches of fabric and press them with the iron again. Keep the fabric in place by adding some pins while you are folding and sewing. Watch minute 1:55 for reference here.

  4. Measure .5 inches and fold the fabric again to leave a clean and professional look on the top hem and the back of your curtains. Watch minute 2:43 for reference here.

  5. Measure 1.5 inches on the top of your curtain and start sewing in a straight line. Watch min 3:57 for reference here. When you finish sewing it should look like this. Watch min 4:36 for reference here.

  6. Sew the hem in the bottom of the curtain similar to the one we created before. Then sew a hem on the side of the fabric as well. Watch min 4:43 for reference here. You are done!

When you finish you are ready to enjoy your new space with fresh new curtains made by yourself!
