Create a Fall Garland with Your Favorite Memories!
Bring a touch of warmth and nostalgia to your home this fall with a charming DIY garland that features all your favorite memories.
I just crafted this amazing garland for my apartment, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out! I felt like my space needed more fall-inspired touches, so last Sunday I went pumpkin hunting. I also had a strong urge to create a garland for the living room—something featuring leaves and autumn colors.
As I was working on the garland, I had the idea to add photos to the leaves, giving it a personal and meaningful touch.
I included memories from past holidays with family and friends because pictures just make everything feel warmer and happier. I absolutely love having these special moments displayed around the house.
MATERIAL:
Scissors
Thread or yarn
Needle
Regular printed pictures
How to Create a Felt Garland with Photos:
NOTE: Any kind of thread or yarn will work perfectly for this project—you don't need any fancy scissors or needles. I just used what I had on hand at home.
I printed the pictures on regular photo paper.
Create a Template:
Begin by drawing the shape of a leaf on a piece of felt. This will act as your template for cutting out leaves from the felt. You can make your leaf template as detailed or as simple as you like, depending on the style you want for your garland.
2. Cut Out Leaves:
Using your leaf template, trace the shape onto your felt sheets in different colors. Once traced, carefully cut out the leaf shapes using scissors.
If you're making a lot of leaves, it might be helpful to stack a few sheets of felt together to cut multiple leaves at once, ensuring uniformity.
3. Prepare Special Leaves:
Select a few of the felt leaves and use a pair of scissors to cut out an oval shape from the center of each one.
These special leaves will be used later to frame your pictures.
4. Assemble the Garland:
Start sewing the leaves together to create the garland. You can sew them end to end, or overlap them slightly for a fuller look.
Use a basic running stitch or any stitch you prefer.
Make sure your stitching is secure and evenly spaced for a neat appearance.
5. Add Special Leaves:
Take the special leaves with the oval cutouts and glue them on top of other leaves of the same color within your garland. Make sure the oval cutouts are positioned in a way that frames the areas where you will place your photos.
Make sure that each oval cutout is left a bit open at the top to create a frame or window for the photos.
Use a strong glue that will hold the felt in place but won’t be too stiff.
6. Insert Pictures:
Once the special leaves are glued onto the garland, carefully place your printed pictures into the open spaces created by the oval cutouts.
If needed, you can use small pieces of tape or glue dots to secure the pictures in place.
Make sure the photos are well-centered and aligned.
7. Hang and Enjoy:
Your garland is now ready to be displayed! Find a good spot to hang it—whether it’s across a mantel, along a wall, or draped over a doorway. Step back and admire your creation, and enjoy the warm, personal touch it adds to your space.
This garland will not only bring a festive feel but also serve as a cherished display of your memories.
