How to Decorate a Small patio: Before and After

Tips and inspiration to transform your small patio or balcony into a colorful oasis. Before and after transformation!

Disclosure: This was a compensated campaign in collaboration with Pier 1 Imports and Latina Bloggers Connect.

Since last week, I've been immersed in transforming my small patio into a vibrant oasis. My vision included bursts of color, a cozy pair of chairs, blooming flowers, and enchanting lighting. Despite the limited space, I knew that blending colors, textures, and adding whimsical details would infuse my personal touch into the project.

After hours of shopping and deliberating over cushions (each style seemed equally appealing!), I finally found everything I needed at my local Pier 1 Imports store. The treasures I brought home were simply stunning, and I was so thrilled that arranging them took only a matter of minutes

Here is the before and after:

Tips About How to Decorate a Small Balcony or Patio:

  1. Prepare with a List

Before you hit the stores, it’s essential to make a detailed list of everything you need to bring your dream patio to life. Measure your space meticulously, especially if it's as small as mine—a cozy balcony.

Planning ahead and visualizing how each item fits will streamline your shopping experience and boost your excitement. I created an inspiration board and that turned out to be incredibly helpful.

While shopping, prioritize comfort, functionality, and appropriately sized furniture for your space.

  2. Embrace Color

Infuse your space with vibrant colors that reflect your personality and style. Consider using colorful cushions, and potted plants to add pops of brightness against neutral and boring backgrounds.

  3. Choose Space-Saving Furniture

Opt for furniture pieces that are compact and multifunctional, such as foldable chairs, stackable tables, or wall-mounted planters. These choices maximize your usable space while offering flexibility in arrangement.

    Tip

Take your time testing each piece of furniture before committing. It’s crucial to ensure that every addition is not only practical but also resonates with your personal style.

  4. Keep It Tidy

Before arranging your new furniture, it's worthwhile to tidy up your patio.

A quick sweep and wipe of floors and walls instantly elevate the space, making it more inviting and ready to showcase your new additions.

5. Arrange the Furniture

Balconies, terraces, and small patios offer the advantage of needing only a few key pieces to fill them up. Begin by positioning the larger items first; for me, this meant looking for a place for the chairs and table first. Before I knew it, my setup was almost complete.

6. Add Accessories

Small patios can appear sparse with just a couple of chairs in the center. Accessories are essential for injecting life and personality into the space! I opted for whimsical string lights for ambiance, cheerful potted flowers placed creatively and vibrant cushions and pillows to tie it all together.

7. Lighting is Magic

Lighting is really important to create a warm and cozy atmosphere on the patio. You do not need complicated systems, a few strings of lights and candles are ideal and not expensive at all.

You can also incorporate ambient lighting with lanterns, or solar-powered lamps to be able to enjoy your patio later into the evening hours.

Once your balcony or small patio is ready, the transformation will be stunning! For an added burst of color, you might also consider painting any wooden furniture you have, as I did with mine HERE.

Now, grab your favorite book, settle in, and savor your newly refreshed and beautifully transformed outdoor oasis!
