DIY: Color Block Birdhouse
How to decorate an adorable and cheerful birdhouse using the color blocking technique.
As I wandered through the craft store, my eyes were drawn to some fun wooden birdhouses in cute shapes. Instantly, an idea took root in my mind: I wanted to decorate one using a super colorful design!
One of the easiest and most effective methods is to use a color-blocking technique. So I armed myself with tape and paints. I envisioned creating a bold and geometric pattern that would transform a humble birdhouse into a spectacular one, and it worked! Check it out :)
MATERIAL:
Brushes
Paint tape
How to Decorate a Birdhouse with Color-Blocking:
1. Paint a Color Base:
Paint the entire house using one color. It can be a neutral tone like beige, black, or navy blue so the vibrant color-blocking technique stands out even more.
2. Create a Design with Tape
When the paint is dry, start adding strips of paint tape to create the incredible color-blockin design. I used the blue painters tape made for painting the walls for this project, it’s easy to remove and it doesn’t peel the paint off with it.
3. Paint Color-Blocking Design
Add a couple of layers of paint in different tones until you get a uniform color-blocking effect.
The first coat of paint will look a bit rough. Wait a few minutes before adding another layer. The number of layers you will need depends on the color you used for the base. Since I used a dark color, it took me about four layers of each color to cover that dark blue, but it was worth it because the contrast was amazing.
4. Protect your Design
Let your color-blocking house dry for a couple of hours before removing the tape.
Add a layer of polyacrylic varnish like this one here to protect the birdhouse from rain and dust.
This technique is super easy to recreate on all kinds of surfaces and craft projects, and it looks colorful and eye-catching! I’m sure your local birds will be super happy to see such a cute new birdhouse for them in your patio :)
