How to Paint Terra Cotta Planters

DIY

Paint terracota planters and add lots of color to your home with these easy tips.

In one day is the official start of spring. I'm excited about the plants and flowers more than anything. When I was living in Mexico I didn't have enough space for flowers or plants in my apartment, so when I moved to Asheville, NC one of the first things I did was to buy a couple of seeds to plant in our tiny garden.

I was really excited when I saw that some of those flowers actually grew. That's how I started to love the idea of filling the house with plants and flowers during spring, they really make me feel happy.

With plans of adding more flowers and plants around the apartment, comes the plan of finding cute inexpensive planters for them, which is not easy. So instead of spending tons of money, I went to the store and bought a few terra cotta planters and painted them myself.

Terra cotta planters are awesome because they are inexpensive, simple and easy to personalize.

How to Paint Terra-Cotta Planters:

  1. Prepare your work space. Add a plastic cover or some newspaper in your work area to protect it from paint.

  2. Paint the pots using acrylic paint. I painted the terracotta planter in one color and then the base for the pot in other color, I really love the contrasting effect. You can use as many colors as you want and even draw some patterns like here.

  3. Add a sealer in your terracotta planters. Apply two layers of Mod Podge or any other sealant protection like Bulls Eye Clear Shellac to protect the paint from water, humidity and dirt.

I have had this planter for almost 8 years and the color still looks great!

Another great idea to save some money with planter is to repurpose things we have around the house and we no longer use like using mugs or cans for tiny cactus and even old tires for bigger plants, like in this project I tried a long ago: How to make a planter with an old tire.
