Create Your Own Day of The Dead Stickers

Create your own Día de Muertos stickers that are perfect for decorating notebooks and more.

We are getting closer and closer to the colorful and joyful celebration of the Dia de Muertos. I personally have great memories of this tradition from when I was a kid. It was always a great excuse to ask my parents about their childhood and hear stories about my abuelito and other family members that have passed away.

Looking through old albums, drinking hot cocoa and making papel picado used to be really fun and special. Since my baby was born, I discovered that I wanted to share with him all the traditions I enjoyed when I was a kid, so he can get to know more about them and make those traditions part of his life.

One of the most delightful ways to celebrate Día de Muertos with kids is through fun crafts and activities related to the celebration. They don’t have to be traditional—creativity is key! Inspired by this idea, I designed these adorable stickers, which I previously shared on mom.me. I used them to decorate some notebooks, and they turned out so cute! My favorite part was sharing stories about Día de Muertos while coloring the stickers with my son.

How to Make your Own Day of The Dead Stickers:

  1. Sketch your design.

  • You’ll need regular printing paper and a pencil to draw your design.

  • Trace a couple of squares of about 2 x 2 inches in a piece of paper.

  • Inside these squares, create designs inspired by Día de Muertos traditions. Think about incorporating elements such as pan de muerto, sugar skulls, traditional foods and beverages, candles, marigold flowers, and papel picado.

  • Draw each element inside a square.

    2. Delineate your design using black ink.

  • Trace your whole design using a black ink pen or marker. I particularly love using illustration pens for this step because they provide clean, precise lines that make a significant impact. When you print the page, the bold, crisp black lines will look fantastic and truly stand out.

    3. Print your stickers!

  • Scan your sketches to be able to manipulate them easily. Adjust brightness and saturation in the image to bring the black lines pop in the paper.

  • Save your design so you can print it over and over again and make more copies for friends.

  • Print your stickers in adhesive printer paper similar to this one here.

    4. Color your stickers.

  • Here comes the most exciting and enjoyable part—my favorite! Once you’ve printed the stickers, gather the kids to cut them out and add color with colored pencils or markers.

I chose to print them in black and white specifically to let their creativity flourish. This way, they can use their imagination to decorate the stickers however they like, making this Día de Muertos craft project even more fun and personal.
