DIY: Frida Kahlo Pumpkin for Halloween

This Halloween, why not create an adorable and quirky pumpkin inspired by the iconic Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo? It’s a fun and unique way to add a touch of art and personality to your Halloween decorations.

I’ve been loving how Día de Muertos decorations are popping up for Halloween this year. It’s like bringing a splash of Mexican color and cheer to the usual spooky vibes, and it’s perfect for those who want something more vibrant than just black.

So, I had this fun idea to mix things up a bit more by using Frida Kahlo’s iconic style as inspiration for our Halloween decor. I ended up decorating a pumpkin with some of her signature bold colors and floral designs, and it turned out super cool!

The best part? It was really easy—no complicated carving involved! It’s a great way to add a unique touch to your Halloween decorations and celebrate in style. Give it a try if you’re up for a creative twist on your seasonal decor :)

How to Make a Frida Kahlo Pumpkin for Halloween:

1. Create the Eyes:

  • Start by carving the eyes for your Frida Kahlo pumpkin. Use a small knife or pumpkin carving tool to carefully make small, round holes in the center of the pumpkin where you want the eyes to go. Be sure to leave enough space around the top of the pumpkin for adding the braid and flower crown later. This will ensure your pumpkin has a balanced and proportional look.

2. Glue on Frida Kahlo’s Iconic Eyebrows:

  • Frida Kahlo was famous for her distinctive and bold eyebrows, so recreating them is essential to capturing her look. I used some faux eyebrows from a dollar store, which worked perfectly. Alternatively, you can craft your own eyebrows using fur or felt for a similar effect.

  • Attach the eyebrows to the pumpkin above the eyes with hot glue or craft glue, ensuring they are positioned to mimic Frida’s signature look.

3. Make the Braid for Frida Kahlo’s Hair:

  • For Frida Kahlo’s iconic braided hair, use yarn to create a thick braid. Start by cutting approximately 60 strands of yarn. Divide the strands in three and braid them tightly.

  • Once you have your braid, glue it around the top part of the pumpkin close to where you made the eye holes, ensuring it wraps around securely. This will form the base for the flower crown and complete the hair look.

4. Decorate Frida Kahlo’s Flower Crown:

  • Frida’s flower crown is one of her most recognizable features, so adding it will really bring your pumpkin to life. Use artificial flowers and leaves to create the crown.

  • Glue the flowers in a line on top of the braid so the style mimics Frida’s iconic look using hot glue or tacky glue. If you're crafting with kids, tacky glue is a safer option as it doesn’t get as hot as hot glue guns.

5. Add Some Sparkly Lips:

  • To add a touch of sparkle to your Frida Kahlo pumpkin, use glittery card stock to create the lips.

  • Cut a small piece of the cardstock into a lip shape and glue it to the pumpkin. The glittery card stock will give the lips a fun, eye-catching sparkle, completing the look with a bit of flair.

This Frida Kahlo pumpkin is going to look amazing in your home! It adds a fun and quirky touch to your Halloween decor, and it’s sure to stand out with its colorful, artistic flair. It’s also a great way to mix things up and bring some extra cheer to your Halloween festivities!
