How to Make a Necklace with Washi Tape

DIY for washi tape lovers! An easy and cute way to create a colorful necklace without painting it.

I received this book to review and shared it with you a few weeks back, Washi Tape Crafts: 110 Ways to Decorate Just About Anything by Amy Anderson.

The book is really cute and small, with approximately 110 washi tape projects and 10 washi tape mini rolls. My favorite part about the book was getting to know more about washi tape, the origin of the material and some tricks to use it correctly in any craft project you have in mind.

Some of the DIY projects in the book look really easy, which is great because you can work on them while waiting in the doctor's office or listening to music before bedtime.

I wish some of the projects, especially the complicated ones had more detailed steps to make them, but the good thing about the book is that there are tons of projects for inspiration! for the home, for you, for your office and even seasonal and for event decor, so that got me excited and I will admit that I love these kinds of cute books to use to decorate my coffee table because they make me feel happy.

I personally enjoyed looking at the jewelry projects because honestly, it never occurred to me to use washi tape in something to wear until I saw the inspiration in the book. So inspired by Washi Tape Crafts books, I created this necklace.

It was fun to make and looks also adorable! I imagine this is a wonderful project to work with kids because it’s so easy and the steps super straightforward.

How to Make a Necklace with Washi Tape:

  1. Create a hole on the top of a circular wood piece. Start by perforating a hole in a wood circular piece. You are going to need a small drill like this one here. Some of the circular pieces are already ready to make necklaces like these here and you don’t have to make an extra hole or anything like that.

  2. Decorate the basswood with the washi tape. Add the washi tape in straight lines until you cover the circular wood piece completely and at the end of the circle cut the excess of washi tape from the borders.

  3. Add Mod Podge for protection. Add one or two layers of Mod Podge to protect the washi tape from water and dust. Wait like an hour until it’s dry.

  4. Add faux suede cord. Measure one of your favorite necklaces to know which length is your favorite and cut a piece of faux suede cord. Add the jump ring to the circular wood piece, then the faux suede cord. You can also add a few beads if you want to add an extra touch! (but totally optional).
