A Beautiful Rich Brown Wall
Painting an accent wall with an intense brown gives you the opportunity to play with accessories in different color palettes and textures.
I've been seeing beautiful homes painted with dark walls all over the internet. I was captivated by the mysterious and interesting effect, and I really wanted to create something similar in my own living room.
Just after looking at Sherwin Williams color forecast colormix™ 2017, I got obsessed with a color named Deep Forest Brown SW 9175 from the holistic palette and it’s coordinating colors. I searched for spaces painted with that color on Pinterest to have a better idea of how it would look, and I started to get excited because the spaces looked dramatic and honestly, really amazing!
I was a bit scared at first, because I usually pick lighter colors to paint whole walls in my home, or sometimes I pick bright bold colors but I only use them for small things like our bathroom door here. This was definitely the first time I considered such a dark shade, and I was not disappointed.

One of the things I was most excited about picking a neutral dark shade, was that I knew it would work great as a base for colorful accessories. This intense brown would also let me play with many color palettes throughout the years with no problem. I also feet that brown was a perfect color for an eclectic home decor style. It compliments most furniture styles and finishes, and well, that’s kind of what I had at home, a mix of modern furniture with ethnic accessories.
Just after I finished painting the first layer, I could see the transformation. It was so exciting.
MATERIAL:
2 quarts of Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Paint. Sheen: Matte. Color: Deep Forest Brown SW 9175
1 Purdy® White Dove™ Roller Cover ½”
KWIK-Release™ 9″ Roller Frame
1 Mil 9′ x 12′ Plastic Drop Cloth
1 ½” Sherwin Williams Contractor Series® Extra Firm Angle Sash Brush

How to paint a rich brown accent wall in your living room:
Prepare your surface to make sure it is clean, dry and sound. Tape off moldings, light switches, electrical connectors, and cover the floors and furniture with a plastic drop cloth.
Let’s paint! I like to start painting the edges all around the wall with an angled brush. Then, I use the roller to cover the whole wall.
Tip: When you go from a light color to a dark color or vice versa, you can apply a layer of multi-purpose latex primer to cover the base color. When going from a light to dark color, you can ask the store employees to tint the primer to make it darker. That will make the process easier, it will give you a smooth finish and better coverage.
I applied two layers of the Deep Forest Brown SW 9175 and waited about 4 hours between coats.
Clean up Time. Remove the painters tape as soon as you finish painting to avoid ripping away the paint. You can use a small brush to fix any mistakes.
This is how a rich brown wall will look with the mix of earthy tones and colorful accessories. It’s a timeless look that you can transform as much as you want through the years.
