Happy Holidays Garland Idea

Make a simple and festive holiday garland with watercolors to decorate your home this holiday season.

This holiday season I got inspired to create something simple and festive to hang next to the Christmas tree. I wanted to cover a small empty space in the wall that was driving me a bit crazy, so this easy project was super easy and perfect for that.

For the garland I thought it would be fun to draw an illustration of a simple Christmas tree instead of using letters or photos. So I used my favorite technique that is the watercolors to make the illustration of a Christmas tree and I really love the subtle end result :)

How to Make a Holiday Garland with Gift Tags:

  1. Measure your gift tags. Trace a couple of rectangles in watercolor paper that are about 3.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, just a bit smaller of your gift tags. My favorite paper is this one, especially if I’m working in a simple project like this one. It’s from the brand Canson, it works great for quick craft projects and it’s not that expensive.

2. Paint a Christmas tree with watercolors. Use a round watercolor brush and press in on the paper creating different “dots” that looked really uneven and following a triangle shape, like a pine tree. Add a yellow star at the top using a smaller round watercolor brush.

3. Create as many gift tags as you want for your garland! I recreated the same Christmas tree a couple of times in the watercolor paper. Another way to recreate this ideas is to paint one design and then scan the image and print it a couple of times on a white card stock or on a watercolor paper sheet.

4. Put the garland together. To assemble the garland, place the Christmas tree illustration on top of the red gift tags using sparkly washi tape. You can also glue the sides a bit just to make sure they stay in place.

5. Add bakers twine to be able to hang your garland. I added some white and sparkly bakers twine around the gift tag and then I hanged the garland on the wall using sparkly and red clothespins similar to these ones.

For this project I used this brand Love + Lemon. They actually sent me these amazing craft products but they are not available anymore. I’m sure you can find red gift tags similar in your craft store or online like these ones here.

Happy holidays! and I hope you like this simple but festive idea.
