These calaveritas are so simple to recreate that you can involve the whole family, including the young ones, to help you decorate any lollipop that you can find in the store so they look like sugar skulls. This way you can give them away as gifts to friends during Halloween or in a Día de Muertos celebration at school or in your community.

What did we use to cover the lollipops? You will be surprise! You can definitely use paper. You will need to cut the paper in a circular shape before wrapping the lollipops, but there is already something in your pantry that you could use instead of paper, and those are coffee filters!

Check out the materials we used and the video where we shared the process to make these Calaveritas lollipops over YouTube and Instagram to give you a better idea of how easy they are so make and how cute they turned out.

MATERIALS:

  • Lollipops, the regular size from any store near you

  • Coffee filters

  • Black ink marker

  • Colorful markers in different bright colors

  • Ribbon or yarn

How to decorate lollipops so they look like Calaveritas:

  1. Start by wrapping a lollipop using one or two coffee filters.

  2. Use an elastic band to keep the coffee filter in place. You could also directly wrap them with a piece of ribbon or thread and skip the step number 5.

  3. Make a quick sketch of a sugar skull or calaverita face using a pencil in your lollipop, and then trace it using a black ink marker.

  4. Then use colorful markers, or colorful pens and/or pencils to decorate around the Calaverita face. Add hearts, flowers, dots and other cute details.

  5. To finish them, add a ribbon around the head of the calaverita. You could also use a cute colorful yarn for this.
