How to Take Better Pictures

Just after we moved to California from North Carolina we decided that we weren’t made to live in the city, San Francisco. Instead we looked for a quiet area, that was close enough to drive to the beach, mountains and city any time we wanted. Of course, as good hermits, we rarely actually leave our quiet area. We love the suburban feel in the parks and farmers markets near our home. But from time to time, we get to experience the beauty of San Francisco, the tall buildings and the interesting variety of personalities in the people crossing the streets. The vibe is pretty unique.

I went to the city just last night to an event, a blog party workshop in the PicsArt offices to get to know more about Spot, PicsArt and PunkPost. I love these kind of events because I get to meet new bloggers and get to chat with old blogger friends from the area.

I really enjoyed some tips about traveling and photography that they shared in the workshop, especially the ones about how to take better lifestyle pictures from the places we visit:

  • Play with color. Look at objects and people in contrast to their surroundings.
  • Frame your shot. The rule of thirds is a photo go to, but not the only option.
  • Photographing interiors. Shot straight on not at an angle. Try to avoid rooms full of people. Focus on smaller vignettes: a beautiful piece of furniture or gallery art wall.

I also got to know more about these apps, PicsArt, PunkPost, Spot. They are quite helpful and fun, check them out and see if you like them.

  • PicsArt. A great app for daily inspiration, photo editing tools that will give a professional look to your images and a community to nurture your creativity.
  • PunkPost. is about love, connection and snail mail. You can send handwritten cards as quick as texting!
  • Spot. This is great for anyone that would like to explore more about their city, restaurants, touristic attractions and get inspiration and recommendations from friends and experts you trust.

The chat from yesterday inspired me to drive farther from home and visit new places every week. I want to indulge myself with better food, indie products and good coffee from the places surrounding me. It’s something I love to do, but never make time to do. You might know about this feeling. I’ll be sharing these adventures through snapchat, so follow along at livecolorfulco. I might continue for a few months until, well, my hermit heart invades me again and I feel like staying close to home all the time again. You might know about this feeling too, am I right?

Make Time for Things that Make you Happy

How to make time for the things that make you happy | LiveColorful.com

Back in 2014, before I got pregnant, I had so much free time. I used to spend so many minutes getting ready for the day, putting on makeup, choosing my clothes, taking selfies, reading, doodling and of course, making time for the things that made me happy like coloring, illustrating and making patterns. I particularly enjoyed the last three things on that list. I wanted to create more fabric and work on challenging sewing projects. I believed that with my baby, things would be hard of course, but possible. I naively decided that I was going to make the time to make patterns and draw every day while the baby slept.

Then, Jax was born. And with the blessing and happiness that he brought to my life, the responsibilities and tiredness appeared. One day after crying for hours, I realized that I needed to decide between spending my precious free time illustrating or sleeping. I decided to sleep, and it was the best decision or I wouldn’t have survived the crazy first months as a new mom.

Then when things got better what happened is that I got busy with well, life. Between projects with the blog, family and me trying to find myself in this new world as a mom, I forgot to make time for the things that made me happy.

A few weeks ago, I found one of my old notebooks with all my doodles and illustrations. I checked out my Spoonflower shop, that I hadn’t update in a whole year, and as soon as I scrolled down the shop I realized that I missed it. I missed the creative process, the search for inspiration and the joy I felt while illustrating and creating patterns.

Just days after I found my notebook, I went to Los Angeles for the #WeAllGrow Summit and there I meet Dariela and Dariana, owners of daridesignstudio.com and artlicensingdesign.com. We had been virtual friends for a long time ago and I admire their work so much. Meeting them in person sparked that curiosity of getting back to old dreams and to pursue them again, this time as a team with my sister.

I’m back to making time for the things that make me happy, like designing products, patterns and creating art and illustrations. I’m finally challenging myself to create something new everyday and I’m feeling creative again.

Filling blank pages in a new notebook is bringing me a great feeling of accomplishment and happiness. Something I didn’t appreciate enough when I had all the time of the world. Now a few minutes being creative are making a huge difference in the way I feel and I act. I’m inspired and excited and I count the hours to sit down and doodle at night, while my baby sleeps.

Have you found yourself feeling like you need to get back to doing something you haven’t done in a long time? How are you finding the time? Any tips on being productive as a creative person?

Live Colorful at #WeAllGrow Summit 2016

Here are some of the amazing things that happened at We All Grow Summit 2016 | LiveColorful.com

We had the fortune to travel to Long Beach, California for #WeAllGrow Summit 2016. It was an amazing experience. We didn’t just learn a lot about blogging, social media, community building and more, we also got to meet inspiring latina women from around the world with whom we shared experiences, tips, and created connections of support and empowerment.

We came back home full of ideas and plans. It took us a few weeks to get back to our routine but we are finally feeling motivated and ready for some adventures.

One of the recent changes we have made on the blog after the conference was to change Live Colorful’s profile picture. Now we have one with both of us as Live Colorful content creators. It was something I decided at the conference. I was craving support and someone with whom to share dreams and goals, and I couldn’t think of anyone better than my sister. Lali is an amazing fashion designer, an adventurer DIYer, and a really cool illustrator. We want to bring together all the things she knows with the things I know, into a better, more colorful and fun brand. It’ll be great, we promise you.

Live Colorful is all about creativity and color! Do it yourself, crafts, home decor, familia and all the things that inspire a colorful lifestyle. Gracias por visitar!

Other new is that we want to push ourselves to create better videos on Live Colorful YouTube channel. We want to share DIY projects that are simple, fun, and colorful, and that you can see and understand no matter what language you speak.

We honestly wanted to separate the channels and create two, one for English DIYs and one for Spanish DIYs, but we opted for mixing them because we really want to keep things simple and memorable. It made more sense to us to have just one YouTube channel and make fun videos that everyone in the world can enjoy.

So back to We All Grow Summit, this is one of the things I love the most about it and I really wanted to share it with you. The HOLA! USA sponsored interactive art installation by Carolina Rubio MacWright, an artist from Bogotá, Colombia, where attendees were prompted to breathe their intentions into origami lanterns that later shone with our hopes and dreams. It was so beautiful.

Also, I got to meet some latino artist, designers, and small business owners at the mercadito at the conference. I got so many things from there. Some books from Lil’LIBROS, a handmade bag from Limonada, and some fun t-shirts for my husband and my baby boy from Chaca Chaka. (Check out the video below para chismosear)

This shop is so special. The Orphaned Earring, beading hearts back together.

One of my fav moments at #WeAllGrow. Getting to know more about these talented hermanitas, Dariela y Dariana de DariDesignStudio.com.

Don’t miss our video recap to see part of our adventures and the things we saw! We were so lucky to be able to attend. The sponsors were so welcoming and the suites were beautifully crafted, we didn’t want to leave. It was a gorgeous conference and we came home feeling so inspired.

The most beautiful part about the conference is probably the message behind it, If one grows, we all grow… I really don’t need to explain more.
