Meet Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year 2017

Posted by

Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year 2017: Poised Taupe (SW 6039). Es clásico y moderno a la vez, el balance perfecto entre cálido y frío.

When I moved to Asheville, North Carolina, I felt captivated by the warm tones that covered the streets of the city during fall.

I arrived with the idea of painting our new apartment in a cool gray tone, but the warmth of the place made me decide for a cozy brown named Mocha (SW 6067).

I painted just a few walls with Mocha (SW 6067), and that was enough to create an intimate and comfy space that we loved for years. However, I dreamt constantly about cool gray walls, something about it made me think of modern and stylish spaces, and I wanted that feeling in my apartment too.

Last week, Sherwin-Williams announced Poised Taupe (SW 6039), as the 2017 Color of the Year. This modern take on a timeless classic is that color I dreamt about 6 years ago, when I moved to Asheville, North Carolina! A beautiful neutral that brings warm and cool tones together to create one irresistibly versatile color.

“Poised Taupe celebrates everything people love about cool gray as a neutral, and also brings in the warmth of brown, taking the color to an entirely new level. Not cool or warm, or gray or brown, Poised Taupe is a weathered, woodsy neutral bringing a sense of coziness and harmony that people are seeking,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams.

A Sherwin-Williams team traveled the world to identify the latest color. From there, they discovered that the neutrals are in a transition from monochrome gray of the past five years to a more complex brown.

The current trends related to natural, organic influences and earthy tones also inspired the selection of this color as a winner for this upcoming year. “Consumers crave spaces where they feel welcome and welcome to get in. The brown earth combined with a conservative gray, creating Poised Taupe, embodies all these emotions,” said Wadden.

TIP: You can incorporate interesting details around your home in bright colors, like the orange bowls and fresh flowers in the image above, so your space always looks fresh and happy.

COLOR PALETTE INSPIRATION:

You can pair Poised Taupe with many rich colors. Some favorites are Stardew (SW 9138), a vibrant Rave Red (SW 6608), a deep teal like Marea Baja (SW 9185) or a sunny hued Bee (SW 6683).

These gorgeous spaces and inspiration from SwiftDecor.com | Live Colorful

Some of you might know already that I went to school for Interior Design. I had always been obsessed with home accessories, paint colors, wall finishes, wall patterns, textures and all those beautiful elements that create a perfect space.

So when I received Carolina and Martha’s email from swiftdecor.com, I was intrigued. I really needed to know more about this interior design-in-a-box service and I really wanted to see what they had to offer.

Martha and Carolina are two sisters living in South Florida. Their business idea sparked after Carolina started decorating her home. She had zero artistic ability, a busy career in Finance, in the midst of finishing her MBA and a new baby at home. One day she came home frustrated after a trip to different home decor shops. She showed her sister what she had bought and as a good designer, Martha told her that the things she bought didn’t match at all. She felt overwhelmed. That night Carolina started looking for home decor sets online. She wanted to find quality sets that include everything she needed, curtains, curtain rods, throw blanket, pillows, wall art, table accents, etc. She couldn’t find anything. So they decided to join forces and with Carolina’s business knowledge and Martha’s understanding of the interior design industry started Swift Décor.

I have to say that I really like their curated collections, they look really cohesive and have their own vibe and feeling. My favorite decor set is the bold collection, and that’s because, well, I can’t say no to bold colors!

They will be launching new collections this summer in collaboration with other designers and online curators so stay tuned.

As a surprise for all of you, Swift Décor. is offering a special $50 OFF coupon using the code: LIVECOLORFUL. So now you know, decorating can be easier than this! And prettier as well.

Modernize your Bathroom with a Bold Color

Never fear to be bold with the color of your doors! Love this beautiful shade of blue. | LiveColorful.com

I decided to transform the bathroom in our master bedroom for Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week 2016! I was so tired of looking at it every morning. It was so plain and boring. I wanted to go for something bold and the first thing that came to mind was to add a vivid shade on the bathroom door to cheer up the space.

One of my favorite parts about paint projects is the color selection process. I like going to the store to check out the paint samples, especially now that Sherwin Williams integrated the new ColorSnap displays in their stores. But when I already have a color in mind from a picture or an item I have at home, I like to use the  ColorSnap app from Sherwin-Williams to select the color. I did the same last year for my DIY colorful bench project inspired by mexican textiles. It was so easy!

Pick a color using the ColorSnap app is easy. Here is how to do it:

  1. Download the app.
  2. Register. That way, you can receive news and save color palettes and favorite colors.
  3. Upload or take a picture of the object that inspires you.
  4. A color palette will appear instantly. You can search for colors by moving the little circles with your fingers until you find the perfect color for your project.

I knew that I wanted to use something between blue and green, and I looked for inspiration in one of my favorite hanging planters that I have in my kitchen. I took a picture of it and uploaded it to the app. I found a beautiful blue/green color named Great Falls (SW 6495).

After I finished painting the door, I decided to paint part of the back wall in the bathroom as well, to give it a deep and interesting appearance. The change is great and we are so happy with the color choice.

MATERIALS:

  • 1 gallon of Emerald Interior Acrylic Paint. Color: Great Falls (SW 6495). Semi-gloss.
  • 1 quart Multi-Purpose Latex Primer.
  • 1 mini roller frame
  • 1 mini foam roller
  • 180 grit paper
  • painters tape
  • paint tray
  • 1 angle paintbrush

STEPS:

1.Prepare the surface. Since my bathroom door system is a bit complicated, I didn’t want to uninstall to paint it. I covered the floors with a plastic drop cloth to avoid messes and used the painters tape all over the floor and door frame.

  1. Apply the primer. I applied one layer of the Multi-Purpose Latex Primer, which works greats on any surface.
  1. Paint! I started by painting the details on the door using the angle paint brush, then I continued on the sides and corners using the mini foam roller.

Tip. To avoid drips and other imperfections while painting a door vertically, drain the brush and foam roller before each layer. I like to carefully sand the door with a fine grit sandpaper in between paint layers, to remove hair, dust and any other imperfections and to get a smooth finish.

  1. Enjoy! When you finish painting, let the door dry for a few hours. Remove the tape, plastic cover and you are ready to enjoy your new bold designed bathroom!

Sherwin Williams just released a new product named SnapDry™ Semi-Gloss Door and Trim Paint which dries to touch within 1 hour of application so  doors can be closed without marring/sticking the same day as painted! I couldn’t use it this time since it won’t be in the stores until next week, but you’ll be able to try it in your next project, especially if you feel inspired with a bold color for your doors!
