I found a package of wooden spoons and other kitchen utensils on sale the other day. I was really excited because I needed new ones for the kitchen. I also wanted to paint them just like I did with my old ones a few months before in this tutorial: Color Your Kitchen Utensils.

I love to see all that color everyday, and decorate them is really easy and fun. I also shared a video, that is only in Spanish, but it will give you a better idea of the process and easy steps 🙂 This would be an amazing gift for friends, family or your sweet mommy on mother’s day!

MATERIALS:

  • Wooden spoons or other kitchen utensils
  • Nontoxic acrylic paint (different colors)
  • Tape
  • Brushes and toothpicks
  • Mod podge or any other transparent wood sealer. I used one natural and nontoxic called Bulls Eye Clear Shellac in my other DIY project and it worked great as well.

STEPS:

1. Apply tape to delineate the area where you want to paint your wooden utensils.

2. Paint them using different colors. You can use a plastic cup and leave the wooden spoons upside down until they get dry.

3. This is optional. Use a toothpick or skewer stick to draw some dots and create a fun pattern.

4. Add two or three layers of mod podge. Wait approximately an hour between layers. This would protect the paint from dust and water.

How to Refresh your Kitchen on a Budget

You don’t need to spend lots of money to create a kitchen that makes you happy. A few decorative accessories, kitchen utensils, and uplifting scents can transform your space completely.

I believe in the power of color and smells. These can transform and refresh any room in your home in an instant, and without breaking the bank.

The color can be injected through decorative elements and kitchen utensils, that by the way, you can change over and over to create different looks and seasonal styles. These decorative elements can be as simple as adding a new kitchen towel, pictures frame, chalkboard, a piece of artwork, wall clock, and even natural flowers and plants.

You can also add new storage containers, jars, utensils, and all those things that are visible on top of our kitchen countertops. For example, you can go from white storage containers to black storage containers or metallic storage containers. These changes seem small, but they can definitely transform the feel of a room in an instant.

You will be surprised to see how a few decorative accessories, kitchen utensils and uplifting scents can transform a space completely. Don't miss this refreshing transformation | LiveColorful.com

I was lucky to get invited to refresh my kitchen as a part of the Family Dollar and Glade® “Refresh Your Home” challenge. That gave the opportunity to add personality to my kitchen with those simple elements I mentioned before.

My kitchen is all white, something I really love about it, but all my kitchen containers were white too, which made it look a bit plain and boring.

My color inspiration came from the Glade® scent, Blooming Peony & Cherry™. The scent made me feel carefree and the color is so energetic, something I really craved for my kitchen.

Getting inspired by the colors of candles is something I learned from my mom, which painted her whole living room area red, after she fell in love of an apple cinnamon scent candle. That’s how I discover how powerful a scent could be in a room, not just because it can be used as color inspiration, but also because smells can make you feel different, and that’s exactly what you need when you crave a change in your home, a fresh sensation.

Check out the before and after and where to find all the elements I used for my kitchen transformation in the Family Dollar blog: Refresh Your Kitchen With Glade® Blooming Peony & Cherry™

This Glade scent inspired room refresh was created in connection with my appointment as a contributor to Family Dollar.

I hope these tips inspire you to transform your kitchen using simple elements and inject personality and life through color and scents.

How to Display Colorful Items Inside of an Armoire

Not being able to paint your walls shouldn’t restrict you from creating a personalized and colorful space. Check out 3 ways to create an interesting effect in your space displaying knick knacks inside shelves, cabinets and armoires.

I have been a renter for the last couple of years. In our last two apartments I couldn’t paint the walls. That was really frustrating for someone like me that craves color so much.

The inability to personalize my space pushed me to look for creative ideas to display color around the house. I used textiles to cover the sofas, bought lots pillows, added removable vinyls and displayed knick knacks on top of a credenza I had behind the dining room table and inside the kitchen cabinets.

One piece of furniture that I have always wanted to have in my home, is an armoire. Armoires are basically a wardrobe or movable cabinet, typically ornate or antique. They are a beautiful and unique piece of furniture that tends to catch the attention because they look so interesting and powerful. Armoires were made to store clothes in the bedroom, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use them somewhere else. They work great as kitchen cabinets or storage in the living room.

Chairish shared with me their amazing vintage furniture collection, and I couldn’t love the armoires more. I picked some of my favorites to share with you and how you can creatively display color in your home using a similar piece of furniture. It’s such a simple technique with a happy effect.

1. Get color inspired.

You need to start by looking around your home and checking out what colors are predominant in your space. Let’s say that you bought some beautiful navy blue pillows. Inspired by that, pick decorative elements to display inside your armoire. You don’t need to match everything with your color inspiration. The elements can have one, two and even more colors in it, just make sure your color inspiration is one of those accent colors.

2. Create a gradient effect.

Similar to the option #1, pick one color you love. To display the knick knacks, go from the darkest shade to the lightest or vice versa. You can do it layer by layer, from the top to the bottom. Another interesting way to use the gradient effect is adding small elements in a gradient order in the same line.

3. Rainbow power.

For color lovers the most fun way to display color is by adding lots of color. The best part is that you don’t need to be careful with the colors in the elements you pick to display, just try to maintain the style (modern, rustic, vintage) so everything looks somewhat coordinated.

I hope these three ideas inspire you to start collecting interesting items and displaying them colorfully inside an armoire, shelves, credenza or kitchen cabinets in your home. These tricks are so simple and easy, a great options for renters or people that want that burst of color without the trouble of painting a whole wall.
