Modernize your Bathroom with a Bold Color

How to paint an interior door with a beautiful blue/green color named Great Falls (SW 6495).

I decided to transform the bathroom in our master bedroom for Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week! I was so tired of looking at it every morning. It was so plain and boring. I wanted to go for something bold and the first thing that came to mind was to add a vivid shade on the bathroom door to cheer up the space.

One of my favorite parts about paint projects is the color selection process. I like going to the store to check out the paint samples, especially now that Sherwin Williams integrated the new ColorSnap displays in their stores. But when I already have a color in mind from a picture or an item I have at home, I like to use the ColorSnap app from Sherwin-Williams to select the color.

I did the same for my DIY colorful bench project inspired by mexican textiles and it was so easy!

Pick a paint color using the ColorSnap app. Here is how to do it:

1. Download the app.

2. Register. That way, you can receive news and save color palettes and favorite colors.

3. Upload or take a picture of the object that inspires you.

4. A color palette will appear instantly. You can search for colors by moving the little circles with your fingers until you find the perfect color for your project.

This is how I found this beautiful Great Falls SW 6495 bold color for my bathroom paint project. Using the ColorSnap app.

I knew that I wanted to use something between blue and green, and I looked for inspiration in one of my favorite hanging planters that I have in my kitchen. I took a picture of it and uploaded it to the app. I found a beautiful blue/green color named Great Falls (SW 6495).

After I finished painting the door, I decided to paint a line as part of the back wall in the bathroom as well, to give it a deep and interesting appearance. The change is great and we are so happy with the color choice.

Here are the materials and steps I followed to paint my bathroom door and wall.

MATERIALS:

• 1 gallon of Emerald Interior Acrylic Paint. Color: Great Falls (SW 6495). Semi-gloss.

• 1 quart Multi-Purpose Latex Primer.

• 1 mini roller frame

• 1 mini foam roller

• 180 grit paper

• painters tape

• paint tray

• 1 angle paintbrush

How to paint a bathroom door:

1. Prepare the surface. Since my bathroom door system is a bit complicated, I didn’t want to uninstall the door to paint it. I covered the floors with a plastic drop cloth to avoid messes and used the painters tape all over the floor and door frame to avoid getting paint there.

2. Apply the primer. I applied one layer of the Multi-Purpose Latex Primer, which works greats on any surface and prepared the door for a bright color layer later.

Tip. To avoid drips and other imperfections while painting a door, drain the brush and foam roller before each layer. I like to carefully sand the door with a fine grit sandpaper in between paint layers, to remove hair, dust and any other imperfections and to get a smooth finish.

3. Paint the door. I started by painting the small details on the door using an angle paint brush, then I continued on the sides and corners using a mini foam roller until I covered the door completely.

I painted the line on the wall at the same time to be able to let them dry and apply a second layer later simultaneously.

4. Enjoy! When you finish painting, let the door and the wall dry for a few hours. Remove the tape, plastic cover and you are ready to enjoy your new bold designed bathroom space.
