The Day of the Dead is one of my favorite celebrations. I love it not only because it is so colorful, but also because it makes me think about my family, and traditions I grew up with in Mexico. Every year, I get excited about creating something inspired by this celebration to decorate my home and set up an ofrenda for my grandpa, grandma, uncles, aunts, and friends.
Sugar skulls are definitely one of the coolest parts of Día de los Muertos. They can be a bit tricky to find here in the U.S., though. That’s why we’ve made our own using white chocolate in the past. I recently painted these calaveritas with watercolors and shared them on Instagram. One of the first suggestions was to use them as cupcake toppers, and I thought that was a fantastic idea! How to Decorate Your Muffins with This Sugar Skull Printable:

Download the Printable:
Start by downloading the sugar skull picture printable from the link provided above. This will give you all the adorable sugar skull designs you need.
Cut Out the Circles:
Next, carefully cut out the circles featuring the sugar skull images. You can use scissors or a circle cutter to make clean, round shapes.
Attach a Toothpick:
To turn your cutouts into cute cupcake or muffin toppers, glue or tape a toothpick to the back of each sugar skull circle.
Make sure it’s securely attached so it stays in place when you stick it into your treats.
Decorate Your Treats:
Once the toothpicks are attached, gently insert them into the tops of your muffins, donuts, or cupcakes. They’ll add a festive touch that’s perfect for celebrating the Day of the Dead.
