DIY: Frida Kahlo Decoupage Earrings

Check out how to make some fantastic decoupaged earrings using Frida Kahlo’s portrait.

July 6 is Frida Kahlo’s birthday! The memories I have about my visits to the Frida Kahlo museum, also known as "La Casa Azul" ("The Blue House"), inspired me to create a fun fashion accessory to honor Frida during her birthday month.

It's a pair of decoupage earrings made out of my favorite portrait of the artist. I just thought that she might appreciate that we celebrate her with something creative and that involves a bit of paint.

I invite you to celebrate with me and make these pretty earrings that will be a unique accessory you can wear year-round!

  • Diamond square unfinished wood earring blanks, like these ones I found here.

  • Earring hooks. I hope you can find a small package of earring hooks because you just need a pair. You could also recycle and reuse some old earring hooks from some earrings you no longer use.

  • Acrylic paint

  • Glitter in the same color as the acrylic paint

  • A tiny printed image of your favorite Frida Kahlo portrait. Look online for royalty free Frida Kahlo images before printing any artwork.

  • Mod podge

  • Glue

How to make Frida Kahlo decoupage earrings:

  1. Paint the wood diamond squares. Pick any bright fun color you can imagine and paint the wood diamond squares. I wanted the portrait to blend in with the base color, so I choose an emerald green that is used in the background of Frida Kahlo’s portrait.

Apply two layers, until the color looks uniform and let them dry for a couple of hours.

  1. Glue Frida Kahlo mini portrait. Use some craft glue, like this one here, to glue Frida Kahlo’s mini portrait in the center of your decoupaged earrings.

Add a layer of mod podge on the top of your photo to protect it from dust and water. My favorite is the matte finish, especially for pictures and projects like this one.

  2. Add some sparkles! This is totally optional but I guarantee you that is worth it because it looks so cute! Add some sparkle to the front part of your earrings using mod podge. This glitter will also help cover any imperfections around the picture and the corners.

  3. Add the earring hooks. After all layers of glue and mod podge are dry, it will be time to add the earrings hooks.

I hope you love this Frida Kahlo decoupaged earring idea as much as I do. I have been wearing the earrings a lot lately and they still looks amazing.

This tecnique is fun and easy, and the possibilities ate endless!
