DIY: Woven Wood Picture Frame

How to make a quirky and fun woven picture frame for your kitchen.

I have a new project for you! I was looking for a picture frame and since I couldn't  find one in the size I wanted, I thought I would make one myself, and because I love crafty and one of a kind projects I had the idea of making my new frame using jute and some wood sticks from the craft store.

This ended up being a great way to create a fun frame and very inexpensive which is always a plus.

• 8 dowel rods wood sticks of about 3/8 inches in diameter and 36 inches long. Similar to these here. (You can buy them from any home depot/lowes store and maybe some craft stores)

• Jute yarn (you can buy it any craft store)

• Scissors

• Heavy duty gardening scissors or a small woodworking handsaw

• Measuring tape

How to make a woven picture frame:

1. Measure your space.

First of all you need to measure the art you want to frame, then you’ll start cutting 8 dowel rods wood sticks with some heavy duty gardening scissors or a small woodworking handsaw in different sizes to create a frame shape.

To create the frame shape, you’ll need to cut these 8 pieces of dowel rods wood sticks in different sizes. The idea is that you need to make one frame and then another one a bit bigger.

The pieces in the inside should measure the same size that your artwork, and the ones outside will just create the illusion of a frame shape so they should be like 3 inches bigger depending how thick or skinny you want your frame.

2. Create the frame shape.

Make a cross with the jute on each corner of the frame shape, and tie securely. You can leave an extra inch on either side to make the cross, this also helps when you're tying them together.

When you finish with all the eight sides, your frame will look something like this below.

In the end you will have two frames, one large and one small.

Then tie each corner of the inside frame to the corresponding corner of the outside frame.

You can lean the frame on the floor to work in this step to make it easy.

3. Create a woven design in your frame.

Tie the end of the jute yarn to one corner and begin to unravel and loop back and forth around the inner and outer frame to create your woven design. I did a zig zag all around the frame.

Make as many loops as you want so you fill the frame completely, or you can add less jute to be able to see the paint in your walls behind.

The key here is to be creative and be happy with your finished product.

When you're done your frame will probably look something like the picture below.

The frame hangs best with a nail in the two top inner corners. Your frame may feel a bit flimsy, but once you hang it it will be significantly more sturdy and will stay in place.

What I love about this project is that is creative. You can use any wood stick that you find, especially if you have beautiful trees around your home. You can also experiment with other yarns or jute colors and the effect will be super interesting.
