DIY: Personalized Metallic Planters

DIY

Decorate metallic planters and add something unique in your patio and garden.

This weekend I went for a walk and I discovered a second hand store near my house, I love these places because they are always interesting, inspirational and you can find thousands of neat things. I always look for things that I like but that are also useful for our home.

This time the goal was to find some second hand pots for some plants I just bought. Pots are expensive in many places, especially if you're looking for some particular design, texture or some style. I personally would rather go to the second hand store and see something that I can fix with paint and tools, like these metallic planters with stripes that I created, it was so easy!

How to Personalize Metallic Planters:

  1. Add holes in your metallic planter or pot. If you are upcycling planters that are not created for real plants and they don’t have any draining system, add some holes underneath with a nail and hammer so water can get out when watering. Another option is to place a plastic container inside the metal pot and plant your plant there and drain the water often to prevent your metallic planters to rust.

2. Paint your metallic planters. I decided to add a pattern in the metallic planters to give them a special touch.  I made lines with a multisurface painters tape before painting them.

I love lines because they are simple, fun and look very chic, if you want to try something different feel free to do it, try circles, diamonds, flowers, hearts, etc. You might need some kind of stickers to create those shapes and then add the spray paint. When you remove the stickers you will have the shapes printed in your metallic planters.

Use metallic spray to personalize metallic planters. I used a dark bronze tone like this one here on top of the copper layer that was already on the pots.

TIP.

If you want a change that is subtle in your metallic planters, combine bronze with copper and silver with gold, the change between tones is not too drastic and the mistakes can be easily covered.

You can also go with a contrasting color, or a bright color for a very different look that is fun! although the mistakes are more visible for sure.

3. Remove the tape. Let the spray paint dry for a couple of hours and remove the painters tape.

In my patio the sun highlights the bronze sparkly finish from the spray paint giving a shine that looks great.

I made two designs using the painters tape, so some of the metallic planters have vertical stripes and others horizontal stripes and I think the group of three planters look amazing in my patio. I hope this idea and tips are useful :)
