Let’s create a wreath for Dia de Muertos that celebrates tradition and creativity, turning your front door into a vibrant canvas of joy this fall!

This is how your Day of the Dead wreath will look like in your door. It’s a fun project to create with the kids for sure!

There are many reasons why I love to decorate the house using Day of the Dead as inspiration, but my favorite is definitely the freedom to use all the colors I want during the fall season.

Lately, I’ve been feeling that our front door looks a bit sad and empty. So, I decided to create something beautiful and seasonal, inspired by this celebration that I cherish so much. I was also excited to try the Day of the Dead products by Crafty Chica, especially the colorful appliqué I got—it looks super fun and I know that it’ll be perfect for this craft project!

How to create a paper flower wreath for Dia de Muertos:

Start by creating the colorful paper flowers (pictures step by step below):

  1. Cut the Tissue Paper:

    • Start by cutting tissue paper into squares. For a wreath that is about 12-inch in diameter, cut 8 squares that are 5 x 5 inches. You'll need about 8 squares for each flower.

      2. Fold the Tissue Paper:

    • Stack the 5 x 5 inches squares of tissue paper on top of each other, making a neat pile.

    • Fold the stack accordion-style by making even, narrow folds. Aim for folds that are approximately 1 to 1.5 inches wide.

    3. Tie the Folded Paper:

    • Use a thin floral wire to secure the center of the folded tissue paper. Wrap the wire tightly around the middle to hold the folds in place.

    4. Create the Flower:

    • Use scissors to trim the ends of the folded tissue paper. For a marigold look, cut the ends into a heart shape or scalloped edge. This will give the flower a more petal-like appearance.

    5. Separate the Layers:

    • Gently separate and fluff each layer of tissue paper, pulling them outward to create a full, flower-like shape. Be careful not to tear the paper.

      6. Repeat for Other Colors:

    • Cut and fold additional squares of tissue paper in different colors. Follow the same process to create more flowers. The number of flowers you need will depend on the size of your wreath. For a 12-inch wreath, I created 10 flowers.

Assemble and embellish your wreath (pictures step by step below):

  1. Attach the Appliqué to Foam:

    • Lay a glittery foam sheet flat on your work surface.

    • Apply hot glue to the back of the Crafty Chica appliqué and press it firmly onto the foam sheet. Hold it in place for a few seconds to make sure it stays in place.

  2. Cut Out the Silhouette:

    • Once the glue has dried, carefully cut around the appliqué shape and the foam sheet. The glittery background will make the appliqué stand out beautifully.

  3. Attach the Appliqué to the Wreath:

    • Position the cut-out appliqué in the center of the wreath. Use hot glue to secure it to the wreath. Press firmly and hold it in place for a few moments until the glue sets.

  4. Add the Paper Flowers:

    • Begin gluing the paper flowers around the wreath. Start from the outer edges and work your way inward, layering the flowers to create a full and festive look.

    • Play around with the arrangement and order of colors to achieve a balanced and vibrant display.
