DIY: Colorful Decoupaged Pumpkins
Discover a budget-friendly way to personalize your pumpkins using just tissue paper and Mod Podge.
I've carved pumpkins, painted them, and even dressed them up as quirky characters, but I’d never tried decorating with the decoupage technique until yesterday. It was an absolute blast!
They’re now proudly displayed in my living room, sitting alongside a small candle and a few of my favorite books.
I love how fun and colorful they turned out, but what really makes me smile is how easy and affordable the project was. Using just simple materials, I was able to create something that adds a cheerful and vibrant touch to my space. It’s amazing how a bit of creativity and basic supplies can transform ordinary pumpkins into charming decor!
MATERIALS:
Pumpkins
Scissors
Brushes or sponges
How to Make Decoupage a Pumpkin with Tissue Paper:
Cut Small Pieces of Tissue Paper
Cut small pieces of tissue paper that measure about 2 cm. Cut different shapes like rhombus, squares and triangles, there are no rules.
Add Mod Podge
Start by placing a thin layer of Mod Podge on the pumpkin using a sponge or small brush. Then glue small pieces of tissue paper one by one making sure that they have been attached correctly. Go all around the pumpkin until you cover it completely.
Once you have covered all the gaps, let the pumpkin dry for an hour.
Add One Extra Layer
Add an extra layer of Mod Podge, this time all over the whole pumpkin. This extra layer will make the decoupage stronger and will protect it from dust and humidity plus it will help make sure that all the pieces of tissue paper are firmly attached.
Add more pieces of tissue paper if needed, or you want the colors to be more intense and want to get rid any transparency. Let it dry for another hour and your decoupage pumpkins will be ready!
I made three small pumpkins that look great as a centerpiece. You can also use this technique on larger pumpkins, but I would recommend cutting the tissue paper pieces much larger and following the same steps.
This is a fun activity to try with the kids as well. I added some glitter at the top to cover the pumpkin stem. You could also paint the stem in gold or silver using metallic acrylic paint like this one for an extra cute detail.
Happy beginning of October!
