An Organized Color-Coded Entryway

DIY

Organize your mudroom or entryway with these easy DIY ideas.

Back to School season is here! My son isn’t quite in school yet, but seeing everybody else getting ready has totally motivated me to organize our mudroom/entrance so that keys, shoes, backpacks, notebooks and other things, have a place when we come home every day.

Before today, shoes were everywhere and mail was piled up in our kitchen counter, it was a mess. Happily, I found some lovely wooden crates that were perfect for this project. I really liked them to store shoes, paper and other materials like keys, sunglasses and toys.

To give them some color, I chose a beautiful blue called Luxe Blue (SW 6537) and I added some details with Sherwin Williams color of the year 2015, Coral Reef (SW 6606) and Teal Tame (SW 6757). These three colors are really beautiful together!

I also used Pure White (SW 7005) to paint some long plywood hobby boards and lines on the wooden crates so everything was matching.

Check out below the before and after to see how easy and cute your entrance could look like with these easy DIY ideas, especially if you are renting an apartment and can’t add many nails or paint your walls, this idea will brighten up your home without being too disruptive.

How to paint some containers to organize your entryway:

1. Create a design with different colors. Use the painter tape to delineate different parts of the containers so you can paint every part in different colors.

2. Paint your wooden crates or wood containers. Apply two or three coats of paint in each color, until you see a uniform and vibrant color. Wait a few hours until they dry completely.

3. Remove the painters tape. Make sure everything is completely dry and your containers will be ready to use! Now it’s time to organize your shoes, mail and other materials in the boxes.

If you want to add the plywood board in your entryway as well, just as a fun extra touch, use a pair of small nails to attach it on your walls. I feel like the plywood boards are a great visual point and a good place to put key hooks to organize your keys. You can even use thumb tacks or washi tape to hang some special family pictures or even you kids art projects in those hobby boards!

You can also color-code your wooden crates, painting them with different colors. That way every family member has one color and knows exactly where to leave their shoes and belongings.

Enjoy your new organized entryway or mudroom!
