1. Check out how big or small the white spaces are.

Look for complicated and intricate designs if you are planning on gifting a coloring books to teenagers (13 year old and up). The coloring books with mandalas or natural elements like gardens and flowers are really relaxing. One of my favorites is Bloom: The Flower Garden Coloring Book. I love the beautiful printed cover and the variety of designs that make the coloring experience interesting and exciting. Some of the coolest books I had seen for teenagers are listed as adult coloring books and have really amazing artwork like this one here and this one here.

For older kids (8 -12 year old), paint by numbers is a great idea, they are easy to color and have something educational to offer. There are so many options to try with paint by numbers. Some of them you can color with acrylic paint and the end results looks like a piece of artwork that you could even frame for your kid’s room! Here is one of my favorites.

For the little ones (4 - 7 years old) look for simple designs, with plenty of white spaces, like one intricate image with all the space around in white, so it’s not overwhelming for them. Coloring books with animals, mythological creatures, video game characters, movies, cartoons, etc. are great for the this age like this one here or here. I also really like Creative Creatures: An Animal Coloring Book. The shapes are modern and cute, and I really love the last part of the coloring book where you can draw your own creative creatures!

Coloring books for toddlers are so easy to pick, because they are usually excited about almost everything. My favorite coloring books for toddlers are the ones that you can paint with water! I had tried so many options but these are the ones my kids and nephews really love. I think they get frustrated with coloring pencils and crayons and with the paint with water they are able to see results and bright colors right away. Some of my favorites are the ones from Melissa & Doug because they last forever, no matter how much water the toddler put over the book.

2. What’s your kid’s favorite thing in the world?

Nowadays you can find tons of coloring books with a specific theme. So start by looking by the things your kids might like. If they are into nature, check out something related with birds, butterflies, gardens or flowers. If you have no idea what they might like, go for something abstract like a modern art coloring book.

3. Paper quality matters.

This might sound silly, but if you are giving away a coloring book for an older kid that is really into design or art, this kid might actually cares about trying different coloring techniques. Think about the material they might have at home, maybe they love using gel pens to color instead of coloring pencils. Almost all coloring books are great for colored pencils but not for gel pens or markers. You can always touch the paper if you are in a store to make sure it is thick enough so if they are using gel pens or markers the ink doesn’t bleed through to the other side of the page. If you are buying the coloring book online, check the description and the reviews just to make sure is the right one for your kid. One of my favorite coloring books for markers and gel pens is this one here.

4. Judge a Book by It’s Cover.

Another way to pick a great coloring book for a gift is simply pick the prettiest cover. I got three beautiful books by Free Period Press to review them and I have to say that one of my favorite things about them, besides the pretty designs, is the paper quality and vibrant colors on their covers. They are something that will catch my attention in a  bookstore for sure.

If you are giving away a coloring book to a kid that takes care of his/her things a lot, I have the feeling that they appreciate a pretty, soft and interesting cover, I can guarantee it.

Now you have a few tips that will help you pick a perfect coloring book for all those family member and friends. Don’t forget to get one for you as well, coloring will make you happy, I promise!
