This Valentine’s Day we got inspired by the cute sweetheart candy and we created decorative pillows that look just like the tiny and yummy candy version!

Some of the things you can learn with this tutorial is how to sew curves, because we know this technique is not always easy if you are a beginner. We will show you an easy way to sew curves so they look smooth and pretty.

We also didn’t use foam for upholstery like the one here, because sometimes it is hard to find or it is too expensive, so instead we will show you how to create that hard sturdy 3D shape that the sweetheart candy has using fusible interfacing fabric.

MATERIALS:

  • Cotton fabric in pastel colors similar to the sweetheart candy

  • Double sided fusible interfacing fabric like this one

  • Scissors

  • Measuring tape or ruler for fabric

  • Embroidery needle and red thread

  • Pillow insert similar to this one or wadding

The video below is just in Spanish but it will give you an idea about how we created the sweetheart candy shape.

Check out the steps below so you can follow along the tutorial.

How to Make a Sweetheart Candy Pillow

  1. Create a heart pattern that measures 21 cm x 27 cm using paper or draw a heart similar to the sweetheart candy directly on the fusible interfacing fabric. Use the same shape to trace and cut the other fabric. You should get 2 pieces of fusible interfacing fabric and 2 pieces of cotton fabric. MIN 0:07

  2. Cut 1 long rectangle out of the cotton fabric that is 29" long x 1 1/2" wide. This will give each heart a 3D volume. Cut rectangles out of the fusible interfacing fabric too. MIN 1:07

  3. Join one heart piece of cotton fabric with one heart piece of fusible interfacing fabric until you get a single piece for each side of your sweetheart candy pillow. Do the same with the long rectangles of fabric and sew them together with the fusible interfacing fabric . MIN 1:58

TIP: If you want your sweetheart candy pillow a big sturdier and harder, you can use double pieces of fusible interfacing fabric on each side of the heart.

4. It is optional but you can embroider some special messages in your sweetheart candy like KISS ME, HUG ME, BE MINE etc in your sweetheart candy pillow using red embroidery floss. MIN 2:10

5. Make small cuts around the seam allowance of all the heart pieces and rectangle pieces to make it easier to sew them together. MIN 2:21

6. It's time to sew together one heart with the rectangle piece, and then the rectangle piece with the other heart. Pin each piece first, and then sew them together. Make sure all the front of the pieces are facing each other. MIN 2:45

7. Don’t forget to leave an opening in your sweetheart candy pillow of about 10 cm to be able to turn your pillow inside out and fill it with wadding or pillow insert later. MIN 4:07

8. Flip your sweetheart candy pillow cover inside out. MIN 4:09

9. Fill your sweetheart candy pillow using pillow insert or wadding. MIN 4:18

10. Sew the opening in your pillow using a needle and thread or your sewing machine. MIN 4:32
