You can add an interesting fabric inside like the one we added in ours for a fun touch!

Valentine’s Day inspired this heart shaped pillow with ruffles that we created. We used some cute hot pink organza that adds an iridescent touch, and it’s so clear that you can use a fun print inside and it will look quite interesting and fun.

Sewing frills was not easy for us at the beginning, but it’s actually not as hard as you think. After you find out the technique of sewing frills, you will want to add them to all your creations because they look so cute!

MATERIALS:

  • 1/2 meters of fabric for the inside of the pillow, like the one we added in ours with flowers.

  • 1/2 meters of organza fabric (for that iridescent touch) Like this beautiful fabric here

  • Sewing machine

  • Measuring tape

  • Chalk

  • Sewing scissors

  • Kraft paper or any other paper to create a heart pattern

  • Wadding or something like this material here

Check out the video below, sorry that is only in Spanish, but it will give you a better idea about how to connect all the pieces together. Read the steps below for more specific details and where to find each one of them in the video.

  1. How to Sew a Heart Shape Pillow with Ruffles:

  1. Start by placing both fabrics together, one on top of the other one

  2. Create your heart pattern. Trace the heart shaped pattern using cardboard paper or kraft paper of about 40 x 40 cm. Cut the pattern and pin it on top of the fabrics.

  3. Use lots of pins to keep the fabric and the pattern in place. Cut the fabric in a heart shaped, you should have four hearts at the end of this process, two of each fabric at the end. Check out the video here: 0:30 for more details.

  4. Sew together one heart made out of organza and one heart made out of the other fabric. Do the same with the other pair. You should have two hearts at the end.

  5. Optional: You can embroider a sweet message in your heart shaped pillow like we did in ours. Check out how we did it here: Minute 0:55.

  6. It’s time to create the ruffle. Check out how we did it here: Minute 1:07. We created the ruffle using a strip of fabric of about 1 1/2 inches. You could make this strip of fabric a bit bigger using a measurement of 2 inches if you want to create more volume.

  7. Fold the strips of fabric in half and sew it in a straight line to create some kind of tube. Check out how we did it here: minute 1:30

  8. Sew the ruffles into one of the heart pieces, sewing it along the edge of the fabric. Check out how we did it here: Minute 1:56

  9. Now sew the other heart piece on top of the other piece with the ruffle already attached. Remember, both heart pieces should be facing face to face with the organza fabric. Check out how we did it here: Minute 2:18

  10. While you are closing the heart pillow don’t forget to leave a small hole to be able to turn our piece inside out and be able to fill it the pillow filling later. Check out how we did it here: minute 2:50

  11. Fill your heart shaped pillow and close the remaining opening using a needle and thread. Check out how we did it here: Minute 3:43

Your Heart pillow is ready! It looks quite cute, that even our cat approves it! and it’s a perfect gift for friends this Valentine's Day 💖
